Contraception

Most women on the pill were prescribed it years ago, often without much conversation about which one and why. Different pills can behave very differently in the body. They can have different effects on skin, mood, periods, weight, and conditions like PCOS and endometriosis. The right pill for your contraception may not always be the right pill for the rest of your health. A consultation can be a good chance to look at the whole picture and find a formulation that may work for both.

*Please note the prescribing of medication is at the discretion of your Practitioner.

The right pill for your health, not just your contraception

A My Clinic consultation goes beyond ticking the contraception box. We talk through what you’re using now, how it’s affecting you, what your goals are, and whether anything else in your health picture should influence the choice.

Combined pills often contain oestrogen and progestogen and can be highly effective when taken correctly. Progestogen-only pills are often prescribed to women who can’t take oestrogen, this can include smokers over 35 and those breastfeeding. Within those categories, the pills often differ in their progestogen type and dose, which is what changes their effects on acne, mood, period heaviness, and hormonal conditions.

Australia has more than thirty pill brands available. The differences matter. Where another option (long-acting reversible methods, non-hormonal approaches) suits you better, we discuss that too.

Book a consultation if you are starting the pill for the first time; if your current pill is not working for you or is causing side effects; if you have a hormonal condition such as PCOS, endometriosis, or severe PMS and want to know whether the pill can help; or if you are in your 40s and have questions about the pill in the context of perimenopause and contraception.

The prescribing of any medication is always at the discretion of your Nurse Practitioner, based on your individual health history and needs.

What's right for you?

There is no single best pill — there is only the right pill for you. Your skin, your cycle, your mood, your medical history, and your life stage all play a part in finding a formulation that genuinely suits you.

A MyClinic Nurse Practitioner will take the time to understand your full health picture before making any recommendations. Whether you are starting out, switching, or managing a hormonal condition alongside contraception, that conversation matters.

Booking takes just a few minutes, and appointments are available online at a time that works for you. Your clinician will guide you through your options with care and without judgement.

Some of the key Contraception symptoms…
Unexplained weight gain — particularly around the abdomen — without any change in eating or exercise habits is one of the most common concerns women bring to health consultations in their 40s and 50s. It is not a failure of discipline. It is almost always a sign that something in the body’s internal balance has shifted.

Not sure if you symptons match the condition. Not a problem, one of our clinicians can discuss them with you and help narrow down possible causes and effective treatments. Just book a general health appointment.
